How Livable Local Works With Google Business Profile
For a contractor, Google Business Profile is worth more than the website. Somebody searches "drywall contractor near me" from a phone four miles away and sees three businesses in the map pack. If you are not one of them, your website ranking on page one does not save you.
Livable Local does not replace Google Business Profile. Nothing can. What it does is keep your profile and your website telling the same story, and give you a work queue for the things that actually move map pack ranking.
What Google is comparing
The map pack ranks on relevance, distance, and prominence. You cannot change distance. The other two you can work on, and most of that work is consistency between your profile and your website.
Google is checking:
- Does the business name match across the profile, the website, and citations?
- Does the address match, character for character?
- Does the phone number match?
- Do the categories match the services described on the site?
- Do the service areas on the profile match the location pages on the site?
- Are there reviews, are they recent, and are they answered?
- Do the site's service pages support what the profile claims?
Most contractors fail on categories and service areas. The profile says one thing, the website says another, and Google resolves the ambiguity by trusting neither.
What Livable Local handles
| Area | What it does |
|---|---|
| Business identity | Keeps name, address, phone consistent between profile and site |
| Categories | Mirrors your profile so primary and secondary categories can be checked against your actual services |
| Service areas | Compares profile service areas to location pages on the site |
| Citations | Audits directory listings and finds inconsistent ones |
| Local competitors | Identifies who ranks in your map pack and where the gaps are |
| Geo grid tracking | Shows where you rank across your service area, not just at your address |
Review requests are a separate job, handled by Livable Reviews rather than Livable Local. The two work together, but do not expect Local to send them.
Setup
Step 1. Claim and verify your profile first. If your profile is unclaimed or unverified, stop and do that. Everything below depends on it. Verification can take days to weeks, so start now. Step 2. Connect the profile to WordPress. Open Livable Local in your WordPress admin and connect your Google Business Profile. Authorize through Google's sign-in flow and select the correct location if you manage more than one. Step 3. Run the consistency check. This compares your profile against your website. Expect mismatches. Almost every contractor site has at least one: a phone number in the footer that changed two years ago, an old suite number, a category that does not match any page on the site. Step 4. Fix the mismatches in this order.- Name. Must match exactly. Not "ABC Drywall LLC" on the profile and "ABC Drywall" on the site. Pick the legal or DBA name you actually operate under and use it everywhere.
- Address. Character for character, including suite formatting.
- Phone. One primary number. If you use call tracking, put the tracking number on the site and the real number on the profile, or use dynamic insertion so the profile number is what Google's crawler sees.
- Categories. Primary category should match your highest value service. Secondary categories should each have a corresponding service page on your site.
- Service areas. Every area on the profile should have real content on the site.
Categories, specifically
This is where contractors lose the most and think about it the least.
Your primary category carries the most weight. A general contractor who mostly does drywall should think hard about whether "General Contractor" or "Drywall Contractor" is the right primary, because it changes which searches you are eligible for.
Rules that hold up:
- Primary category matches your highest revenue service
- Every secondary category has a service page on the site
- Do not add categories for work you do not actually do, since it dilutes relevance and invites competitor edit suggestions
- Recheck annually, because Google adds and retires categories
Service areas and location pages
A service area business can list areas it serves. Google weights this against what your website actually supports.
If your profile lists twelve cities and your website has one page mentioning them in a list, that is not support. If it lists five cities and you have five real location pages with local project photos, local references, and specifics about working in that area, that is support.
Fewer, better is the right trade. Cut your profile service areas to the ones you can back up with real content, then build content before you expand.
Do not generate thirty templated city pages with the name swapped. That approach has been degrading for years and it now creates risk rather than reward.
Reviews
The highest leverage input a contractor controls.
What matters:
- Volume relative to competitors in your map pack
- Recency. Reviews from the last ninety days weigh more than a wall of five year old ones
- Response rate. Answer all of them, including the bad ones, briefly and professionally
- Content. Reviews mentioning specific services and locations reinforce relevance
What to do: ask on completion day, every time, with a direct link. Do not batch requests, do not incentivize them, and do not filter for positive ones. Gating reviews violates Google's policy and profiles get suspended for it.
Answer negative reviews in two or three sentences. Acknowledge, state what you did, offer to continue offline. You are not writing for the reviewer. You are writing for the next person reading it.
How this fits with Yoast
Livable Local and Yoast overlap on local schema, so decide ownership.
| Function | Owner |
|---|---|
| Base site schema graph | Yoast |
| LocalBusiness schema | One of them, not both |
| Service and area served schema | Livable |
| Profile connection and management | Livable Local |
| Citations and competitor tracking | Livable Local |
If you run Yoast Local SEO, you likely do not need Livable emitting a second LocalBusiness block. Check your page source for application/ld+json and confirm one graph. See how Livable SEO works with Yoast.
What to check monthly
- Profile is still verified and not suspended
- No unapproved edits accepted on your listing
- New reviews answered
- Review volume trending up
- Geo grid compared to last month
- Hours accurate, including holidays
- Photos added, since profiles with recent photos perform better
- Categories still correct
Fifteen minutes a month. Most contractors do it once and never again, which is exactly why the ones who maintain it pull ahead.
FAQ
Does Livable Local replace Google Business Profile? No. Nothing does. It connects your profile to your website and keeps them consistent. Do I need Yoast Local SEO too? Usually not both. Pick one owner for LocalBusiness schema. How long until I see map pack movement? Consistency fixes can show in weeks. Review volume and content depth compound over months. Anyone promising faster is guessing. Should I list every city I serve? Only the ones you can support with real content on your site. Over listing dilutes relevance. What if my profile is suspended? Fix the underlying cause first, usually an address or category issue, then appeal through Google. Livable can identify likely causes but cannot reinstate a profile.Next step
